Hominy Creek Greenway

What a beautiful night on the greenway

As part of RiverLink’s mission to spearhead the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River, we support greenways and public open space as a mechanism for conservation and improving water quality.   Since 2009 RiverLink has worked with the City of Asheville, Buncombe County, the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and the West Asheville Neighborhood to purchase land known as the “Waller Tract” to extend the Hominy Creek Greenway into West Asheville neighborhoods.   The 14 acres of forested land borders Hominy Creek, between Shelburne Road and Sand Hill Road.  In 2010, the City of Asheville purchased the property with funds from the city, Buncombe County, and contributions from the community raised by RiverLink and the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club.

In 2010 a group of dedicated individuals developed the Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway to assist in the management, hcglogomaintenance, and planning for the park elements.   RiverLink continues to support the group and development of the park, as their fiscal agent, providing resources and assistance for the group. The Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway are currently working closely with the City of Asheville to accomplish our mission to manage and create community parkland that maintains its wild nature, preserves the area’s rich history, and connects the West Asheville community to the river and to downtown.   To find out more information about the park, it’s history, and our group please visit our website: www.fohcg.org

We are currently in the Master Planning phase of the park and greenway.  Over the past two years the Friends of Hominy Creek has hosted events and provided additional opportunities to reach out to the West Asheville Community and have gathered much input, ideas, and concerns on the park development.  We have been working directly with the City of Asheville Parks Department to develop the first draft of the park Master Plan.   (Link to master plan)
