Counselor Position Summary

French Broad RiverCamp is a week-long day camp for rising 3rd-5th and 5th-8th graders that focuses on the French Broad Watershed. As a camp counselor you will report directly to the Education Coordinator/Camp Director to ensure a fun and safe experience for all campers. Counselors will work approximately 6 hours a day, 5 days a week for the duration of camp and will be compensated $11/hr.

Camp dates are: June 12-16, June 19-23, June 26-30, July 10-14. Applicants should be available for all dates.

FBRC is run by RiverLink, a 501(c)3 non-profit that promotes the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River and its watershed as a place to live, learn, work and play.

Duties

  • Supervise and help facilitate activities for up to 12 campers from 9am-4pm
    • Activities include river recreation (rafting, swimming, canoeing), environmental education lessons, and service-learning (e.g. habitat restoration and river clean-ups)
  • Compassionately and appropriately manage camper behavior
  • Share duties transporting campers in a 15-passenger van
  • Provide either pre- or post-care for campers from 7:30am to 9am or 4pm to 6pm
  • Communicate professionally with parents and guardians
  • Represent RiverLink well in public while helping campers to do the same
  • Log hours worked on a timesheet

Requirements

  • Candidates must be 18 years of age and be eligible to work legally in the United States
  • Clean driving record, with experience and comfort driving large vehicles preferred
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Must be able to attend each day of camp
  • Ability to work outdoors six hours a day and to engage in or assist with physical activities including river recreation and river cleanups (may include heavy lifting)

Required Skills, Experience, and Attributes

  • College degree or equivalent experience, or currently enrolled in college; preferably in Environmental Studies or Science or a relevant field
  • Possess experience and passion for working with youth, especially with ages 8-14
  • Must be certified, at minimum, in First Aid and CPR by camp start date (June 12)
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and make decisions with camper and staff safety in mind
  • Capacity to work closely with one other counselor and the camp director
  • Willingness to take direction from the camp director
  • A sense of humor, positive attitude, and patience working with campers and volunteers

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience leading youth outdoors
  • Experience working with diverse groups of youth
  • River recreation skill or experience (canoeing or rafting)
  • Knowledge of Western North Carolina’s ecology, especially as it pertains to rivers
