Watershed Stewardship Intern

Are you passionate about environmental conservation and water quality? Would you rather spend a summer on the river than at a desk? RiverLink is one of the lead protectors of the French Broad River and its watershed as a place to live, learn, work and play. We are looking for an energetic and engaged intern to help us monitor and steward our French Broad River Paddle Trail campsites, assist with stewardship of conservation easements, lead education and outreach events, and provide support for watershed restoration projects.

Title: Watershed Stewardship Intern

Reports to: Watershed Coordinator

Duration: May 20th – August 20th 2017 15 hours per week. Start and end dates are flexible.

Location:  Asheville, NC

Type: Part-time unpaid (possibility for academic credit)

Responsibilities:

  • Support Watershed Resource Coordinator with monitoring of French Broad River Paddle Trail campsites.
  • Assist with stewardship of RiverLink’s conservation easements and fee simple properties
  • Provide administrative support for RiverLink’s land conservation program
  • Coordinate and lead education and outreach events with the public
  • Provide support for our watershed restoration projects on an as-needed basis

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience and ability to paddle and navigate a canoe.
  • Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS and handheld GPS systems (Preferred not required)
  • Working knowledge of watershed hydrology and invasive species (Preferred not required)
  • Great interpersonal skills and ability to speak in front of large groups.
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
