Group Volunteer Opportunities

Many of our service days are held with private groups from schools, business, church groups and more. These groups often reach out to us and request a volunteer day on a specific date. We work with these groups to find an appropriate project that needs some extra hands. We do ask that groups be at least 5 people before we schedule a private service day. So contact us at volunteer@riverlink.org and we’ll schedule a group volunteer opportunity for you!

Note: we often need help on specific projects to meet deadlines or grant requirements. As such we may ask for your group to contribute to those despite the allure of other service opportunities.

Possible Activities

Invasive Plant Removal

Invasive species group volunteerThis is our most common type of service day. We focus on a particular park or piece of land and aim to remove all of the non native invasive plants from the area. These plants can suffocate or out compete native varieties that provide valuable habitat and ecosystem services. Typically these efforts are hosted on a stream bank or in a stormwater management area.

Recommended group: This service day is perfect for any volunteer group. Invasive plants come in many varieties, some like English Ivy are easy to remove and perfect for kids. Other are more difficult like Japanese Knotweed and perfect for those looking for a challenge.

Type of work: Pulling, cutting, digging, hauling etc.

Age Requirement: 10 and up

Max group size: 50

River Cleanup

River Cleanup group volunteerWe love to get people out on the water for service days! For this option we’ll put your group in boats and float down a section of the French Broad River. All along the way we will pull tires, toilets, lost phones and other trash out of the water. You can expect to get dirty, work hard, and have a lot of fun!

Recommended group: This activity is only for those familiar with paddling or comfortable on the river. At least half of your volunteers needs to know how to paddle a canoe.  River cleanups are fun but can be challenging.

Type of work: Paddling, pulling, and hauling

Age requirement: 15 and up (younger groups must have a minimum ratio of 1:3 adults to kids)

Max group size: 18 (more spots available if our partnering organizations are free on the service date.)

Stream Cleanup

Stream cleanup group volunteer Even these little waterways can use our help. For these service days we will walk down a creek typically within town, and carry out any trash we find. Once we reach the end we typically get out and walk back along a roadside. We can provide waders on request, but usually water shoes and old clothes work just fine.

Recommended group: This is perfect for volunteers that want to get in the water, but may be intimidated by paddling. There are many difficulties of creek walks, so we can find one that’s good for your group.

Type of work: Creek walking, hauling, and trash pickup.

Age requirement: 10 and up

Max group size: 30 (can be larger with more chaperones)

Roadside Cleanup

roadside cleanup group volunteerThese service days are great to get the trash before it even reaches the water. We’ll walk down an back along popular roads and bag up all the trash we find. All volunteers will get bright yellow vests and a grabber. If there’s a dirty road in your neighborhood you’d like to take on let us know.

Recommended group: This is a great opportunity for groups of volunteers that aren’t as comfortable with the outdoors, or don’t want to get as dirty.

Type of work: Walking, hauling, and trash pickup

Age requirement: 6 and up

Max group size: 30 (can be larger with more chaperones)
