Tyler Smith

Watershed Conservation Intern
Tyler Smith is currently a senior at the University of North Carolina Asheville, majoring in Environmental Science and Physics, with concentrations in Ecology & Environmental Biology and Applied Physics. Raised with a strong connection to the natural world, Tyler spent much of his childhood exploring the woods in search of salamanders and other wildlife. Those early experiences fostered a deep passion for ecosystem conservation and restoration, making environmental science a natural academic path.
His interest in physics is driven by a curiosity about how the world functions at a fundamental level, as well as a long-term goal of pursuing environmental engineering in graduate school. During high school, Tyler participated in an internship with his local watershed nonprofit, an experience that helped shape his commitment to environmental stewardship. Combined with the impact of Hurricane Helene and guidance from several influential mentors, that experience strengthened his desire to pursue a career in conservation and restoration.
As a RiverLink intern, Tyler is excited to gain hands-on field experience and contribute to the organization’s work protecting and restoring the French Broad River watershed. He is grateful for the opportunity to learn from a respected environmental organization and has already gained valuable experience during his first few weeks with the team.
Outside of school and work, Tyler enjoys rock climbing, hiking, playing soccer, and spending time with friends.
