What is River Cane?

River cane (Arundinaria gigantea) is a unique species of bamboo native to the southeastern United States that grows along riverbanks and in floodplains and wetland areas. It plays a crucial ecological role by stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, and providing habitat for various wildlife species. It is also significant for indigenous communities who utilize river cane for crafts, construction, and more. However, river cane faces threats from invasive species like kudzu, which can quickly overtake a stand of river cane. Preserving river cane is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, controlling erosion, and for ensuring the cultural and environmental heritage of the region.

If you are passionate about preserving river cane like we are, join us Thursdays from 10am-12pm removing Kudzu from the vulnerable stand of river cane along the greenway in the River Arts District. Our first work day will be June 15th and we will hold these work days every Thursday through July 27th.
